Haiti's Greatest Mayor

Yvon A. Pierre's Swearing-In Ceremony.
PictureYvon A. Pierre at The Conference of Mayors in 1983 with Haiti's Then President Jean-Claude Duvalier.
Meet the greatest mayor any place in Haiti has ever known. At the age of 29, he became the mayor of a town in Haiti called Saint Louis du Sud. He was the youngest mayor at the time. Having education as a focus, he built three elementary schools and opened the first high school Saint Louis has ever had.

In addition, he gave the population access to necessities such as clean water and electricity for the first time. Having access to clean water helped prevent diseases. And kids were able to study in a better lighting when it gets dark.

Furthermore, knowing how Haitians love their carnival, he had floats at the yearly parades during Mardi Gras (also a first). Which brought local tourists to the town, and helped small businesses. To add a little icing on the cake, he opened the first bar/restaurant the town has ever had.

These were some of the great things that he was able to accomplish. But to me what makes him even more special is the fact that his leadership didn’t stop once he was no longer a mayor. Over a decade after he had resigned, he opened the town’s first kindergarten and influenced his wife to fight for the department of health to bring a modern clinic to Saint Louis.

In a country where most politicians disappoint, he brought satisfaction.

I call him, “Le Premier Saint Louisien”. He’s also my dear dad and my personal hero.

My Top 10 Favorite Movies of Will Smith

3/23/2017

It’s no secret that Will Smith is my favorite movie star. So, I have decided to put together a list of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of Him. Now, This list is really not based on box-office Success or reviews or even on award nominations. Even though, I know which ones had better this or that. It’s basically if I had to watch 10 of his movies for the rest of my life – I would go with:

1.-Bad Boys 2
This was the first Smith’s movie that I ever watched in a movie theater. It was the summer of 2003, in a small movie theater in Canarsie, Brooklyn. I was with my sisters. It’s a funny action movie. And the combination between Smith and Martin Lawrence is awesome. Not to mention, that scene after Lawrence’s character finds out that his sister is on his way to Cuba. You must love that scene. Unfortunately though, this movie has the lowest rating on this list.

2.-The Pursuit of Happyness
This movie is based on the life of Chris Gardner. Two scenes in that movie are some of the most motivational scenes ever. The first is when Smith’s character tells his son to follow his dream. The second one is when his character gets the job at the very end of the movie. To me, this is Smith’s best performance ever. And he should have won the Oscar for it.

3.-Hitch
So I was rehearsing for my first film, J-12. And then a friend of the DP was there, and she said, “You guys remind me so much of Hitch.” Referring to Catherine Pena and me. Hitch is a feel-good romantic comedy that I have watched too many times to count. It’s set in my favorite city, NYC. It also stars the lovely and beautiful Eva Mendes, whom I admire. It has an average sixty percent on reviews. Which makes me wonder? What else do these people expect? But for me, I just can’t wait to watch it again.

4.-Focus
Just like Hitch, this is another feel-good movie that I have watched probably more than I should have. I mean can you blame me? The wardrobe styling in that movie is my kind of fashion. It's also set in different cities, and I love to travel. Oh, did I mention the sexy relationship between Smith’s character and Margot Robbie’s? And though, Smith plays sort of the bad guy. You want him to win because he’s so clever.

5.- Ali
Many would argue that this is Smith’s best performance. I would definitely say that it’s among the top three. A biopic about the life of sports legend Muhammad Ali, it mainly focuses on controversies between 1964 and 1974. I love the soundtrack at the end.

6.-Bad Boys
Smith pairs up with one of my of my favorites Martin Lawrence for a comedic action movie. It’s hard to not sit and watch this when it’s on TV. This is the first Smith’s movie that I have ever seen. And it’s definitely one of my favorites.

 6.-Independence Day
“Today, we celebrate our independence day.” Man, that speech was well delivered. This is the only movie on this list that Smith doesn’t necessarily play the lead, as it is more about an ensemble cast. However, this movie is among my Top fifteen favorite movies of all time.

7- Seven Pounds
Let me just start by saying that on this list, this movie has my favorite trailer, and most definitely one of my top 5 favorite trailers ever. It follows the story of a man that loses his family in a car accident while he’s driving due to his negligence. Now, he decides that his life is not worth living.  However, he wants to do something good for seven strangers before he dies.

 9.- Concussion
This film has yet another good performance by Smith. A lot of people have 'beef' with Smith’s accent in the movie, saying it’s not an authentic Nigerian accent. What most of them don’t realize is that Dr. Bennet Omalu the character whom Smith is playing doesn’t have a thick Nigerian accent either. Perhaps, it’s because of all the studies that he’s done in different places. It’s also hard for a lot of Americans to digest the fact that playing football can be linked to CTE.

10.-Hancock
Imagine being in the middle of times square with probably thousands of fans screaming, “Fresh Prince, Fresh Prince.” Well, that was my experience one spring night in 2008 as I was working on the set of Hancock. It was the first time that I ever got to see Will Smith in Person, man I would never forget that night.  Hancock is by far the only movie where Will Smith plays a superhero - A very clumsy and careless one but still.

10 Aerial Shots That will Make You Fall In Love With "Les Cayes".

All these pictures were taken by my friend Rodney Boutin. He was born in "Les Cayes", studied Marketing in the Dominican Republic. Now, he's back in Haiti. Ever since we were younger, he has always been passionate about "Les Cayes". Now - He is using his passion for Photography to show the beauty of the city.

1.- Road to "Les Cayes".

Picture
Well, Because to get to Les Cayes, you have to get on this road. It's the second longest Interstate highway in the country. And as you can see, it's splendid.

2.- "Quatre Chemins"

Picture
No Other city in Haiti has this entrance. This Intersection links three highways and a boulevard. The Three highways lead to Port-au-Prince, Camp-Perrin and Port-Salut, The Boulevard is the entrance to the city.

3.- "Carrefour Aurel"

Picture
One of the most popular intersections of "Les Cayes", perhaps right after "Quatre Chemins". It links five very traveled streets. And it was home to the only functional movie theatre, "AudioVision".

4.- The Cathedral

Picture
This one is my personal favorite. It shows the Cathedral of Les Cayes, and to the left of the church there's Institution Frere Odile Joseph, where I spent 12 years of my life. It's also at that Cathedral that I received my first Communion, reconciliation and my confirmation.

5.- Gelee Beach

Picture
One of the longest and most visited beaches in Haiti. The white sand of Gelée beach is very popular in Haiti, not only for its restaurants which serve typical southern Haiti dishes such as tonm-tonm, grilled-conch, grilled-fish and lobster, but also for hosting an annual music festival around mid-August which usually features some of the best Compas music bands

6.- Ports.

Picture
"Les Cayes" has two ports, one commercial and one touristic.

7.- Pont L'Islet.

Picture
This Bridge spans one of the rivers of "Les Cayes".

8.- A Magnificent City.

Picture
I asked Rodney Boutin to describe this picture in one word, and he said, "Magic".  And He was right, I couldn't believe my eyes.

9.- "Carrefour Tambour"

Picture
I whitened this being built in 2003, as I lived now to far from there. It symbolizes the drums that they used in the Haitian Revolution in 1803. It was built to celebrate its 200th anniversary.

10.- The City

Picture
Well, This would be your guide should you decide to experience "Les Cayes" yourself.

10 Reasons Why The South Of Haiti Should Be Your Next Destination - Perri Pierre.

10/6/2015

1.- Southern Hospitality.

It is a fact! People in the South are more welcoming. I am sure you have heard it the world over. And it's no different in Haiti. Perhaps, why they call the capital city of this department, Les Cayes "The City Of Hospitality".

Picture

2.- Beautiful Beaches.

From Aquin to Coteaux, the South has some of the most beautiful beaches the country has to offer. This list includes, Gelee Beach - One of the longest and most visited Beaches in Haiti, Point-De-Sable Beach in Port Salut, and not to forget Abakabay - which recently made CNN's World's 100 Best Beaches.
Picture

3.- Resorts.

Speaking of Abaka bay Beach, it's part of one of the most beautiful resorts in Haiti, "Abaka Bay Resort Beach Front Hotel". Located on the island of Ile-A-Vache, it's only a 15-20 minute yacht ride from the port of Les Cayes. But Abakabay is not the only resort on this Island, not too far there is Port-Morgan.
Picture

4.- The Waterfall - Saut-Mathurine.

Located in Camp-Perrin, Saut-Mathurine is the largest waterfall in Haiti. The source of its stream of water comes from the Rivière de Cavaillon. And it doesn't matter if it's over 100 degrees everywhere else. It always feels good there. Simply amazing!!!
Picture

5.- Botanical Garden.

Located in Bergeau, about a mile away from Les Cayes, this 50 acre garden contains plants, fruits and some very exotic flowers. It is the country's most spectacular botanical garden. And it’s soon to be the Caribbean's best.
Picture

6.- Mountains - Macaya.

Like to hike and climb mountain trails? Well, you have come to the right place. The south is home to the second Highest mountain of Haiti: Macaya.
Picture

7.- Historic Sites - Forts.

Numerous Historical battles took place in the south. Forts were built as a form of protection. Among them we can name, Fort des Anglais and Fort des Oliviers. Both located in Saint Louis du Sud, about half an hour drive from Les Cayes. Fort des Oliviers was built by the French during the colonial period, to fight the English.
Picture

8.- Caves.

The South of Haiti has two of Haiti's Caves, including the country's Largest: Cave Marie-Jeanne. It is Located in Port-a-Piment, in the western part of the south and is about 120 meters deep and 4 kilometers long, making it one of the largest caves in the Caribbean.
Picture

9.- Sunset.

Any town located on the south-western side of the country has the perfect angle to watch the sun sink slowly into the sea. And that makes the south the go-to vacation spot to watch sunsets. My personal favorite spot is in Port-Salut. It has the most beautiful sunset that I have ever seen.
Picture

10.- Food.

To be fair, everyone has different taste in food. But if you're into seafood, the chefs in the south got you. Because from the Conch in Gelee Beach, to the lobster in Port-Salut, they will make you the best seafood that you have ever tasted.

Hi Guys,

My Facebook page was hacked last night and I am no longer in control of it. It’s a verified Page with my name “Perri Pierre”. The link to it is Facebook.com/perri.pierre. My team and I have contacted Facebook about it and what not. They’re trying to get it back to me. But in the meantime, I would kindly ask to unlike the page, and to avoid any interaction with it.

If I do get it back, I will post a video stating that. If not, eventually I will have another page and I will release a statement with the link to it.

Thank you for your understanding,

Perri Pierre
